A couple of weeks later, the responses started trickling back in. I remember opening those envelopes one by one, pulling out checks for $5, $10, and sometimes even $20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then I started reading the memo line notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I wish I could give more.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;So happy to help.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Thank you for what you&#8217;re doing.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember just sitting there stunned. Five dollars didn&#8217;t seem like much on paper, but the memo line notes told different stories. For some people, their gift amount carried real weight and sacrifice. That $5 might have felt like $500,000 to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even then, without having the language for it, I knew something deeper was happening. This wasn&#8217;t transactional. This wasn&#8217;t about money in the way I had been taught to think about money. This was bigger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, I&#8217;ve come to believe that fundraising, at its core, is spiritual in nature. And I don&#8217;t mean religious. I mean human, emotional, and even a little mystical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone gives something they&#8217;ve earned &#8212; something that represents their time, their effort, their life &#8212; and offers it to help solve a problem or meet a need, it sparks something powerful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s why I believe fundraising has very little to do with money.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving Is Part of Who We Are<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every person has a need to give. It shows up in different ways&#8212;time, advice, attention, and resources. But it&#8217;s always there. And when people give, three important things tend to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Giving subdues the power of money. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Money has a pull on all of us. We want it, we worry about it, and we measure ourselves by it. It can quietly take hold of our thinking. But when someone gives money away &#8212; even a small amount &#8212; they loosen that grip and start to take control back. There&#8217;s freedom in that act.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Giving blesses the giver.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You&#8217;ve seen it before &#8212; maybe felt it yourself &#8212; that sense of joy when you help someone else. There&#8217;s actual chemistry behind it, but you don&#8217;t need science to tell you it&#8217;s real. People feel lighter, more connected, and alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Giving creates real change. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A gift can meet needs, fuel missions, and transform organizations. But it also transforms the donor. They get to see their values come to life in the world and be part of something bigger than themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its simplest level, money is just stored value, representing someone&#8217;s labor and time. When they give it up, they&#8217;re transferring a piece of themselves to meet a need. It feels sacred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re Doing More Than Processing Gifts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why it&#8217;s so important that everyone in an organization &#8212; not just frontline fundraisers &#8212; understands what&#8217;s really going on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That check for $5 and that gift of $500,000 come from the same place: a human being deciding to let go of something valuable in order to do good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That should change how we handle every gift &#8212; how we acknowledge it, talk about it internally, and build systems around it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might look like revenue coming into your system, but it&#8217;s also trust, hope, and love, expressed in a very tangible way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why I believe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonprofitpro.com\/post\/the-donor-centered-approach-to-major-gift-fundraising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major gift officers have one of the best jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world. You get to be a broker of love, standing between a donor&#8217;s desire to do good and a real need in the world, helping connect the two in a meaningful way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Daily Practice of Staying Grounded<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, it&#8217;s easy to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonprofitpro.com\/post\/the-hidden-science-inside-every-gift-what-neuroscience-is-teaching-us-about-generosity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lose sight of that perspective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This work can often become about numbers, deadlines, and reports &#8212; and what starts as deeply relational can slowly turn transactional if you&#8217;re not paying attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s why staying grounded in what&#8217;s actually happening matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few tips to keep you there:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay close to the need.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let yourself feel the weight of the problem your organization is addressing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a giver yourself &#8212; with your time or your money &#8212; so you understand firsthand what it feels like to let go of something valuable for someone else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay present with your donors. Look them in the eye and pay attention to what&#8217;s happening in those moments when they choose to give.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, fundraising is about giving people a way to express who they are and what they care about in a profound, meaningful, and, yes, spiritual way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can hold onto that, it will steady you in the hard moments and keep you humble in the good ones.
